 MAKANA
(pronounced: /muh-kah-nuh/)
is the Hawaiian word for gift, or present. In Hawai'i, as in many parts of the world, Christmas is a time for giving makana to one another. Our greatest makana, though, are our keiki (children). This special time of year is a wonderful time to celebrate with our children! |
 HŌKŪ
(pronounced: /hoh-kooh/)
means star. In Hawai'i, as is common in other places where Christmas is celebrated, the hōkū is used as a popular decoration. Traditionally, Hawaiians used hōkū as an important method of ocean navigation during voyages throughout the Pacific. |
 KEIKI KĀNE ‘AWAKEKE
(pronounced: /kay-kee kaah-neh aah-vuh-keh-keh/)
means ginger boy and is the word used for the 'ono (yummy) gingerbread boy cookies we make and eat during the holiday season here in Hawai'i. |

KAIKAMAHINE ‘AWAKEKE

means ginger girl and is the word used for the 'ono (yummy) gingerbread girl cookies we make and eat during the holiday season here in Hawai'i. |
 LEINEKIA
(pronounced: /lay-neh-kee-uh/)
is the Hawaiian transliteration for reindeer. Sometimes during Christmas in Hawai'i, if you are lucky, you may see leinekia adorned with leis flying through the clear night skies, guiding a sleigh full of presents. |
 ANELA
(pronounced: /uh-neh-lah/)
is the Hawaiian transliteration for angel. As in other parts of the world, anela are a common symbol of hope, peace, and tranquility, commonly seen during the holiday season here in Hawai'i. |
 LĀ'AU KALIKIMAKA
(pronounced: /lah-ow kuh-lee-kee-mah-kuh/)
means Christmas tree. Lā'au kalikimaka do not grow in Hawai'i. Every year families anxiously await the arrival of large containers from the Mainland filled with lā'au kalikimaka. As in many places around the world, it is an exciting time for families to pick out and then decorate their special holiday tree. |
